Basic Idea 7

Changing Styles

Basic Concept: A long-running story (or numerous, mirrored stories) that flows through numerous eras of art of film and is illustrated in a way that demonstrates each era! Could be done in a very unusual way.

Target Demographic: ???

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way. A story told in an unusual way. A story without words.

Basic Idea 6

The Salem Witch Trials: Re-Imagined

Basic Concept: A retelling of the Salem Witch Trials. Possible done in a way that resonates far more with modern audiences. Give personalities and stories to the people involved. Actual witches. Diverse witches!

Target Demographic: Young adult.

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way. A historical story.

Basic Idea 5

Two Sides: Ancient Greece

Basic Concept: The factually accurate story of a Greek battle, but interlaced with the Greek mythology. Very visual. Possibly educational, but very artsy.

Target Demographic: Young adult. Edgy. Look for blog/website?

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way. A historical story.

Basic Idea 4

Beauty and the Freaks

Basic Concept: Beauty and the Beast meets Shawn of the Dead. Like Beauty and the Beast, but the staff and prince are all classic monsters instead of furniture, and a zombie apocalypse breaks out halfway through and the monsters and Beauty team up to fight the zombies! Metaphor for the plague in France. Beauty wears a plague doctor mask, and other plague imagery for the weapons and things!

Target Demographic: Young adult. Gothic horror fans - find a related website.

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way.

Basic Idea 3

Dearg-Due: An Edgy, Irish Vampire Story

Basic Concept: A cliche, mocking retelling of the Dearg Due Irish legend - of a girl that kills herself to avoid an arranged marriage, then rises again to take revenge on her family. Drawing off lots of cliche vampire tropes.

Target Demographic: Young adult.

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way.

Basic Idea 2

A Factual Palaeontology Comic

Basic Concept: An educational comic following an extremely basic story with the main purpose of educating children on different species of dinosaur and the science behind their lives. Very bright, fun and factual.

Target Demographic: Children. The Phoenix Comic might be a good external client.

Category Possibilities: A story for a younger demographic.

Basic Idea 1

George and the Dragon: A Retelling

Basic Concept: The story of St. George and the Dragon, but told with the knight being a woman. Makes an old story more exciting and modern, as it promotes feminism and LGBT relationships (as the princess remains in the story). Fairly lighthearted.

Target Demographic: Young adult.

Category Possibilities: An old story in a new way.

The Choice to Work as a Group

Within the last year, our projects have encouraged us to explore our strengths, weakness and places of interest within the umbrella of comic arts. We've also experienced working alone, versus working as part of a creative team.

Something I found through this is that my strengths and main interest lie within the writing side of producing a piece of work, as well as the marketing and promotional work that is necessary both during and post-production when creating a book.

Interestingly, I found that a close friend and previous teammate of mine, Katy, had strengths in other areas, meaning that together we covered all bases. We discussed this and found that it would be a sensible idea to work together to produce the highest standard of work possible between us. We also noted that this made it more likely that we'd produce something more accessible for a wider audience (as we had two outlooks contributing, instead of one.

At this point, we have a rough idea of how to split the roles (this is subject to change).

Project Concept

This semester, we've been tasked with creating a comic or book to fit under one of six given categories. These categories are:

- A true story.
- A story told with no words.
- A story aimed at a demographic significantly older or younger than yourself.

- An old story told in a new way.
- A historical story.
- A story presented in an interesting way.

These categories are very open and easy to work with, so I intend to come up with ideas first and link them into the categories afterwards. I find this is generally a more interesting and successful way of approaching a project like this.
